So I just sold my 2005 5.9 litre laraite crew cab sport 4x4 with 64000km, I was having some problems with it here and there, and the warranty ran out at 65000km, so away it went,
Scouting threw the paper and I found a 93 crew cab dodge diesel 4x4 with 159,000km and not a spec of rust to be seen on it and this old **** guy that put fuel conditioner in ever tank of gas he ever put in it and owned it since new, so its sitting in my drive way now, a few little fixes to it now and it runs like a dream,
This truck absolutley destroys the fuel milage of my 2005 truck and is paid for leaving me a bit of kraft dinner money in my jeans so I love it at this point,
I towed my 11,900lb fifth wheel on the long weekend for 4 hrs and it handled it, not quite like the new one did but it made it, some of the hills I had the pedal to the metal, but it never missed a beat, it would do about 70km per hr up some of the steep hills wheres the 05 would hold 85 and gain if you pinned it but what can you expect from something 15 yrs old.
I think I might put a air box in it and 4 inch exhaust and call it a day,
Anyway at this point its the best 14,000 bucks I think I have ever spent.

U will love the adjustability of a VE pump for more power, and just all around fine tuning. Welcome to the 1st gen section of DTR, Fill in yer sig with all the details n do some research in the "sticky" at the top of the 1st gen section. It contains TONS of excellent information!

There is something about the 1st gens that Dodge/Cummins did right. Our mechanic back home has a 92 club cab 4x4 auto 250 and he has had it since new. He bought it right off the showroom floor. He told me that a year ago, he almost had it sold for $13,500 but at last minute he bailed out cause he couldnt part with it. He loves it way to much. He also has a 3rd gen that he rarely drives and he told me he'd sell that one way before he would sell his 1st gen.

if i had a chance between a 45,000 dollar new truck or a 1st gen, i would take the 45K and buy 5 more first gens before i would buy a new cummins. anything you can fix 75% or more of the stuff on the truck with a basic handtool set you know it is reliable. all it takes to turn these trucks up is a screwdriver and a couple wrenches, not a 500 dollar box and a complex computer system. you say it does 70 up a hill and the new truck would do 85??? they cost 40,000$+ and are over 325+ horsepower and 600+ torque, it ought to pull that trailer at 100 while cooking you breakfast, giving you a back massage, driving for you and getting 20+ mpg for 40,000$. that truck is 160 horsepower and will tow, drag, push and pull anything you hook behind it, all while getting 15mpg. my truck gets 17 mpg driving and 15 towing a bobcat. probably the best investment ive ever made.

fix the KDP, 3200 spring, BHAF, 4 inch exhaust, tweak the pump a little, and drive it for another 300,000.

I liked that last post because those were my thoughts exactly, I have even had some people come up to me and ask me were I got the truck in such good condition, Noone ever commented on my 05, so its a win win with this baby,
Everyone thinks I am going threw a mid life crisis but i just laugh and rub that extra 25g thats sitting in my pocket after the down size, and then I think of how much the new trucks depreciate after a few years when there new like that and I like the 93 even more.
Up here in Canada those trucks in mint condition are truly are a rare comoditity, and when you do see one in pristine shape youll see some smart retired guy with a cowboy hat on that wouldnt trade it for all the cattle in Alberta,
I am not to sure what the first few guys on the post were talking about quite yet but like the one guy said maybe in time ill figure it out.

they are meaning you will think those modifications you listed is all your going to do, it aint, stuff is CHEAP for these trucks, you can get about 350 horse at the rear wheels out of one of these trucks for only a minimum amount of money.

Yup thats what we meant. I started with just 4" exhaust...now Ive got injectors, pump cranked, custom intake, turbo, clutch and tranny swap...and now Im wanting EDM injectors....It just never ends! And I love it!

If u like to play with more power, and once u see how easy it is to play with it, and turn up the power, U wont just stop at an exhaust and intake. Trust me! I have been there before! lol Thats what were reffering too. Its just soo easy and addicting to "tweek" these trucks, its insane, lol, almost like a drug its so addicting!!

That post pretty much sums it up.

I look in the catalogs that get sent my way; nothing at all for an over-ten-year-old truck, but full of generic-looking plastic add-ons for shiny new trucks.

I had much rather have my goodies hand-built one-of-a-kind, than to spend good money on some silly trinkety dress-up stuff that any kid with a credit-card can have.

The almost off the book property taxes don't hurt my feelings, either.

You can take the 25K and buy a sportscar for a real mid life crisis. I had mine when I was 22. I am 41 now. I wish I was not so good at math.

Funny you mention buying the sportscar part for the midlife crisis, thats exactly what I had in mind, Sell the 05, buy a cheaper work truck that will still be half decent on fuel and pull the fifth wheel from time to time, So I started looking at 05 convertible 645 bmw, to shake off any of the blues I thought I was going to have from driving the old dodge but I havent seen any of the blues yet so Im way ahead of where I thought I would be and where I live its get nice and hot, its 36 celcius right now but for anly about 4 months out of the year, and a good 5 months worht of winter and bad roads, so the new bmw is going to be a real mid life crisis blues shaker if I can find the right one being that it will bein the garage for the majority of the year.

I am a noob to the 1st gens also. I just got in a load of stuff from the UPS guy. Not much go-fast, but a bunch of longevity and reliability. If you have an auto, get a deeper pan and an aux. cooler on it. 5-speed, overfill by a quart. Kill the KDP, and run a BHAF!
I get 17mpg unloaded and 11mpg pulling 10K with overdrive off. I love my truck and I am so happy to be back in a Mopar.
