View Full Version : 1984 K5 Repower
We'll here is my repower program to date.
1984 K5 Blazer 4x4 6.2 Detroit 700r4 np208 4" lift new 35" bfg at tires. I just bought a 92 d250 2x4 auto 5.9 ctd. Also bought a rear corporate 14 bolt full float with 4.10 and a 3/4 ton dana 44 front with 4.10. Still don't know what I'm going to do about a tranny yet, options are a nv4500/np205 or the stock auto in the d250 and a np205. The Dodge is kinda fast for a stock engine and tranny with 176k on it. Here is what I got into it so far.
K5 paid 1250.00
lift pump for the 6.2 20.00
D250 paid 1600.00
14 bolt 175.00
Dana 44 175.00
Total is 3220.00
The dodge needs a ip(leaks bad) @ 700.00-750.00 and the fuel heater is also leaking.
Here are a few pictures.

yea, no kidding awsome, the only sugeestion I have is brace the front of the frame, they are terribly weak around the steering box, o and Id go w/ the nv4500-205 combo

What year did your D44 come out of? The reason I ask is in the 1979 model year all 1/2 and 3/4 ton fronts were switched to Corporate 10 bolts, many do not know that.
The corporate 10 Bolt was stronger than the D44, and you can save a bunch of work by just swapping spindles out.
4.10 is way too steep of a gear for a Cummins, I have them currently in my 79 K20/4BT swap. 62 MPH is flat out at 2500 with no O/D.
You may want to consider trying to trade the 6BT for a good 4BT, plenty of power and a whole lot less weight hanging on the front of that thing, my 4BT sags the stock 3/4 ton front springs pretty good.

Oh yea, kind of forgot, look at what DieselJon is doing for his Sub, good ideas on using the Dodge crossmember to mount the engine!

Thanks, I like the combo also.

Yea I plan on boxing the frame plus what ever is neccessary for extra strength, cause I have to notch the frame for the ac comp.
I also am leaning towards the nv4500/205 combo, It kind depends on cost. It would be cheaper to mod. the current tranny to 4wd, the nv4500 plus all the stuff to convert to a manual will be costly. I have to buy a np205 no matter what out of a 89-93 dodge passenger drop, I think they are the same auto/man.

Not sure what year, both came out of a 86 blazer in the wrecking yard. From what I have read the d44 has a thicker tubing wall. And yes I have a 1/2 ton corp. 10 bolt front and a 12 bolt rear.
I will be running 35" tires with a overdrive tranny for sure, so I will stick with the 4.10 for 4-wheelin in the rocky mnts.
There is a 400 pound difference in the engines plus the bumper I'm going to build and a winch, so your are right there will be alot of extra weight up there, but I will have to beef up the springs and deal with it cause the 5.9 is staying[coffee]

Thanks, I will.
My donor is a od auto tranny so I assume it is a 518. Is there a full manual valve body kit for this tranny? That would eliminate the tv cable and simplify things, and I could run my stock np208 divorced. This would save me some money now and I could always switch later to a nv4500 if it fails or I come into some money. Just trying to get all my ducks in a row before I tear into it. Thanks

You can get a rebuild kit for about $40 for the VE, for all the seals....you might try that before you drop 700 on a new pump.
EDIT:
Cool swap by the way!!! [guitar]

It only took an hour to build a bracket for me to use the factory GM A/C and it took no frame notching or hose changes. There is a pic in my album. I have the freightliner brackets on my engine, but I am sure something similiar could be done with a dodge. I just was not crazy about notching the frame any more than needed. There are brake lines you will have to redo as well if you go that route.

I will say from personal experience on my 88 K5 (I broke the frame in half at the steering box), either box/ add a mtal plate on the inside of the frame/ and add the brace, the frames in that area are terribly weak especially w/ 1200lbs sitting over it. Also I'd add hydro assist steering on it much easier to steer and gives relief to the frame also.

Yea I have seen a few pictures on the net showing the frame craked on these trucks, so yea I will be boxing and adding stiffeners where I think necessary, also on my d44 front axel tubes.
Turbos10 has a good point on notching the frame for the ac, no sence in cutting where not needed, his setup looks great also. I have yet to see any pics. of a frame notch for a factory dodge ac comp. but from what I read it needs to be done and is common practice. I have both ac setups so I have options.

This guys truck is notched as cleanly as you could do it....still looks like more work than building a bracket.

The cummins seems awful heavy for a D44 for me, but I could be wrong. Why not just swap a 60 in there and not worry about it? Little more money now, peace of mind in the long run. Not just weight, but think of the torque of a cummins! That will be HARD on a 44.

Your are right but the d44 will have to do for a while, cause the d60 is about a grand around here. The tranny is my biggest concern now, money wise atleast.

I hear ya there. Been looking for a chevy 60 front for my toyota and they've been going for over a grand!
Should be a cool swap. I look forward to seeing the progress.
We'll I have made a little progress.I bought a nv4500/np205 with all the adaptors for 1700.00 plus tax. and did a little horse trading with a member on here for parts off a 94 dodge with a nv4500. Also bought a 3rd gen manifold from a dtr member. There for a while I did'nt know what to do about the tranny now I have two[coffee] My 4 year year old boy is having lots of fun on this project:cool: I hope to pull the drive train next week. Cool build, I want to see more pics!!! :)
Almost ready to start putting it back togeather. I will build my own 2" body lift and install new body mounts next along with the new axels so I can put my new tires on. I traded some machine work for my new wheels and sold the old tires for 400.00 and bought new bfgs for 870.00 so my new tires are 470.00, not to bad.
Also need to remove the interior and the tranny hump. Reinforce the frame where I can and clean the undercarriage in preperation for some kind of rust protector, maybe por15 I think thats what it's called.
Here sre a few pics. of the k5
Been working to many hours at work to get anything done on the k5 lately, but have been doing lots of measuring, figuring & buying though. The 92 radiator & intercooler wil fit in the k5 with very little cutting and fab work:cool: Purchased a ORD weld on steering brace, new/used 2" bodylift, new body mounts, and a 87 C30 c&c truck for parts @ 400.00. It has the exact pedal assembly I need with the hydrolic clutch and hydro boost brakes, 2wd steering box if I go crossover/hydro assist on the steering, an extra core support, & 14 bolt rear. The TBI 350 & sm465 along with harness and computer I will try and sell for 300-500 dollars which run and shift perfect. I will also try and get 100-300 out of the front clip, minus the core support, which is also in great shape. I also sold my 6.2/700r4/np208 for 375.00 and the radiator for 20.00. Whats left of the C30 will be sold for scrap @ 160.00 a ton:cool:

If you are in S'ville, feel free to look me up. You can crawl all over my truck and see what is involved. There are a few little things and decisions you need to make up from before you start....tranny/tcase combo to start. Lemme know if you need any help.

Ok awesome I'll do that. I've been just hangin around aledo and weatherford lately but pm me your number and I might make a trip down to stephenville to check your truck out. Was it a pretty straight forward swap? Doesn't seem like itll be that tough. This is just a toy anyway so it doesn't have to be perfect and pretty. Not doin a/c or anything. I'm gonna be doin the build out at randys shop in cresson, so when I get started maybe you could stop by and lend us a hand

That will work. It is pretty straight forward with a few things in mind. I can point it all out when were are standing around the truck so it will make sense. I would love to help with a swap, but we are building a new house and shop right now so I have more to do than I can. I am paying to have my toys worked on lately:(. I might can cruise by a couple times to see how it is going or if ya get stuck on something. I have done a good deal of cross breed engine...tranny...chassis....body swaps so I can help you through anything that might come up.
I'll shoot a PM.

How is your buggy running? Been in a mud pit with it yet?:D. I took mine in the mud(accidentally) a while back....too much work to clean up....But hogging 12x12 ruts at 45MPH(tire speed only :)) was fun!

Well it'll be awhile before I'm ready to swap. I've gota get all my parts in order first, and I'm gonna go through and redo the engine too. I'd still like to come by and take a look at yours for some ideas though. Will a NP205 mate up to the 47RE? I can't decide what tranny to use, but that's what I've got right now so its either rebuild that one or put a 5 speed in

Anything can be done:cool:....depends on what you want to spend....
Honestly, I have not done the research, but I believe that it is relatively simple. You might have to do an input change and/or have an adapter made to go between the two. Don't quote me, but I think a first gen dodge NP205 will have the right spline count and possibly the base circle. But, there can be issues with the two not centering on the same size circle. I had this issue with mine and found a guy that made an adapter.
I used all GM from the engine back, but I think the dodge would have been a little cheaper. I tryed a TH400 first and ended up dropping a ton putting a well built 4L80 in.....it added up quick.

I havent started puttin it back together just yet, should be a lot of fun to drive when it's finished though.
Bought me another donor truck! This one is a 87 K5 with a rebuilt 350 TBI, 82 D60 front and a 75 14 bolt rear, sm465/np205, tom woods front drive shaft and a six states rear drive shaft, ord steering brace, ord torsion bar quick disconnect and a manual tilt steering column for 1450.00. I have already sold the 350 for 500.00. I will sell the tranny and t-case also to help recover some cost. I ended up making 100.00 so far on the C30 donor truck and still have the tranny for sale. I will use the Dana 60 front on this and the steering column. It's startin to look like Sanford & son around here[coffee]

Ya I thought about just using the tranny thats already there, and running a 14 bolt in the rear and a 60 up front. But that would mean buying an adapter to run the cummins with the tranny thats there, if that one would even hold, and also buyin a 14 bolt and a 60. But it would be cheaper for me to use the 47 out of the dodge and rebuild it, then take the d70 out of the dodge, and put new gears and a locker in it. My buddy at 4wheel parts has a dana 70 front axle he said I could have, so if I can make that work itd be awesome, but if not, i'll just use a d60 up front. I'm prolly gonna run 4:56s or 4:88s. Not sure yet. And I've still gotta find an np205 to use either way
turbos10

I think if you could find a good first gen dodge, you would be way ahead on parts. If it is a toy, the no OD tranny would still be okay and you could rob everything from one chassis to put in another. It would come with the D70 rear and D60 front as well as the NP205. If you have an engine and dont need that, you could get a truck with the engine robbed for a little of nothing. I know where a wrecked 1st gen is for $2K. It has a getrag. I know a guy that has a few first gens for parts as well if you need something.

Ya if I could do that it would be awesome. Just gota find one for CHEAP. I'm trying to at least get this thing going for as little money as possible. I mean don't get me wrong, I definately wanna do it right, but I'm low on funds right now and don't have a lot to put into it. I do have 2 ten bolt rear axles, one with new 4:88s, and new seals, along with 1 d44 with new 4:88s, and new warn hubs, plus 2 ten bolt fronts to sell. And I've got a brand new 350, and a new tranny all to sell to get some cash. Some out of whats in the blazer right now and some that are sittn at home from past projects

You may consider using a 4bt instead, sometimes When I'm broke I wish I would have looked a little harder for one cause then I could have stuck with the stock drive train and it would probably be on the road already. I just really wanted the performance of the 6bt[coffee]

im going to do the samw e swap i was wondering if you used the dodge motor mounts or did you fab your own
No I bought mine from avalanche engineering for 399.00 plus shipping. They come with everything, 1st gen isolator pads, motor mounts and crossmember. I just put them in today, they are adjustable up and down and front to back. I have them all the up and all the way back. I will set the motor in tomorrow to see how it fits.

are you planning on running a dana 60 cause i know if your truck is stock height the housing will come in contact with the oil pand i found that out the hard way i put a 60 out of a later model truck in my dodge and the casting ribs are a lot different and i ended up with a hole in my pan
My d60 came out of a 82 chev 1 ton. I have a 4" lift now, probably gonna be more like 2" inches with the engine in there.

it doesnt really sag the suspention that much maybe half an inch you couldnt really tell when my brother in law put a cummins in his 74 chevy pickup
Well i got the engine where I want it and it's going to be tight with the radiator and will require some cutting to use the 92 dodge radiator. Here are a few pics.
Well I decided to go with an alumn. radiator from summit racing and it is going to work perfect. I also got the intercooler and the piping in there. Here are a few pics. I need to find a new fan shroud and make a few brackets for the radiator, then I will put the tranny and t-case in there and build a crossmember. Then take it all apart again and fully box and paint the frame.
