Hey is he pulling your leg? I know for a fact that dodge put 354 perkins engines in there 2ton trucks in the late 60's early 70's. And the firt cummins engine in a Dodge truck was a 290 it stands for 290 hp their in the D700 and D800 trucks yes there inline 6's.

no im with bgilbert on this one, 6 cylinder non-turbocharged Mitsubishi turd offered for two or three years 78-79 or so. I saw a post on rcc about this its definitely the mitsu motor, i heard there good for nothing. If i recall properly they don't even get very good mileage either

I looked at one on a local lot a couple years ago; I think it was a 76 model and it was Mitsibishi inline six.

I am with bill on this one too. They made a full size N/A diesel back then. There is a near perfect one 30 miles from me. Are you sure it is mitsubishi though? The guy who owned it told me it was a small N/A perkins. I was thinking the mitsubishi motor was in the ram 50 diesel.

I'm with Bill, the big trucks were history(US) in78 I don't even think there was a lifestyle cab that ever had the perkins in it, c-cabs had them in the class 5&6, I'd bet its a mitsu 243.

Something is jogging my remembery that it was an Isuzu diesel in the D150 models in the late 70's.

The ram 50 did come with an optional mitsu diesel and they are supposed to get 35+ mpg. The ram 50 to my knowledge wasn't available until 82 or 84 I think. The one he is talking about is a full size half ton.
http://www.pbase.com/txs/image/45203467 This is a pic of the mitsu NA 6 out of a 1/2 ton dodge, I believe it was a 78 or 79, they were indeed such a slug that nobody wanted one and were only offered 2 or 3 years and that was probably the unsold production left over from the first year. The motor is laid out similar to a cummins in that the block has no cast in bell like gas motors, there is a flywheel housing (adapter), in the mitsu dodges it bolts to an LA case. You can tell it's out of a dodge if you look close at the converter. Dodge made several 727s for diesel apps in the eighties, the mitsu was the only one that used the a case, most used the b motor case.

I owned one years ago. It was definately a Mitsubishi inline six 100 hp. Sweet running engine, but a real slug. especially with the automatic that mine had. A few Ram 50's came through with a 4-cyl diesel in the early 80's. Made by Mitsubishi as they made the truck!

FWIW those little Mitsu diesels are really neat, I worked for Mitsu since 1985 and we saw a couple of them here and there, biggest thing is to make sure you keep the Timing belt serviced on schedule, and there used to be a TSB regarding the t-belt and inj pump timing, IIRC the srevice manual specs were wrong...it was a looong time ago.
