195 thermostat???where??
Does anyone know where to get a 195 thermostat for a 96 CTD? It has a 180 in it now and in the winter I freeze my butt off and the temp guage doesn't come up above 3/8 ths.
I've tried to get a 195 for this truck like I had in my 91 intercooled but I cant find one for the 96.
Does anyone have a line on these???

You cannot get a factory replacement 195. Someone found a thermostat that has the same outside diameter and its Napa P/N 532090. I am running one of these right now. On the highway it stays at 195, some times driving around town it climbs almost to the end of the white line before temp coming down to 195 again. The reason being the factory stat is a bypass, but the Napa one is not. Read the info on the link and you will see what I am talking about. It did heat much, much better in winter.

I believe I have the stock thermostat, but don't have too many cold winter issues...
I use a stainless steel winter front to cover the grill openings. Honestly, I would consider a winter front to be a requirement, not an option, for operating these trucks in sustained cold climates.

Have you guys tried a Cummins Service Center for the correct thermostat?
I know when I had a 96 12V it would run below center all the time except when I had a load on it. Then, it would come up to Temp and stay there.
The bypass is when the engine is cold. The way I understand it, the coolant circulates around the head only until it comes up to temp and the thermostat
then opens allowing additional water to flow into the system.
Hauling in Dixie had a few problems with his thermostat in a 24v. He could better explain the operation and might have a answer for your questions.

I have found that drilling a small hole ( 1/16 if I remember correctly ) in the thermostat seems to help the high rise a first start up/ An old timer told me that it ether let the small air pocket out or let a little Flo by.

I have the stock thermostat in my 97 no problem with heat even without the block heater. I also run a Webasto diesel operated block heater. This is the best money i ever spent on my truck. It is nice to get into my truck in the winter and have some heat in the cab and also enought to melt the frost on the windsheld. It is much better for starting the engine also, the timer can set for when you want it to come on and how long it will run,it only heats the water to about 120 to 130 degrees but on days when it is in the single numbers it feels good in the cab.
