$1800 later....

I finally have a decent riding, no road walking, straight driving, no vibration 1st gen!!!

I had the following replaced by a buddy of mine who owns the local tire store:

- 6 New Tires - 10 ply Uniroyals
- Front Coil Springs
- 4 New Shocks
- All New Wheel Bearings & Seals
- 4 New Ball Joints

There are two concrete bridges close to the house that are about 20 ft. apart & long that we cross on our way to church. It used to be a double-handed white nuckle trip across those things just waiting for the ole girl to swap ends. Now I just float over them like a new truck.

The correct front coil springs are the Moog 5716S. After searching the forum, there are numerous threads with different Moog #'s so I called them direct. Come to find out, the 5716S is the Ultra Heavy Duty spring. Not saying the others won't work, but my front end came up a little over 3 inches. Obviously it will settle a little, but it sure changed the appearance of the truck and got all of the steering components where they needed to be.

I also had him take a look at my surging cruise. After much troubleshooting we could not find anything wrong. There was a time it did not do this, so I went back to see what all mods I had done to see if MAYBE something could have caused it. Come to find out, I found the culprit. I had adjusted the smoke screw the wrong way! I had read in several threads a good rule of thumb is to set the screw flush with the houseing and be done with it. I had done just that, but I had it flush with the lock nut on the top, not the bottom side of the cover. Once I took the cover off and adjusted it correctly, I now have cruise without the surge as well as a better running truck.

Sorry for the long post. I am just happy with my findings and improvements and wanted to share.

Thats great to hear! Im not familliar with the fancy 1st gens that have cruise, so im curious as to how the smoke screw has an effect on the cruise control???

me too, I can't explain it, but it cured my surging cruise control problem. Maybe someone with more knowledge of the VE will chime in...

The smoke screw stops the afc pin from retracting all the way up to the lowest fuel setting. When you tighten the smoke screw down the amount of fuel allowed by the IP is increased at that particular boost pressure. With your cruise control it appears that the amount of fuel deliveried was more than it could compensate for at the time. When you retracted the smoke screw the boost needs to be higher to allow the same fuel delivery. This takes time and allows it to settle out instead of hunt. At least that is my best guess.

yup, I'd like to ride in a truck with the AFC foot ground off that has cruise---betcha it'd be pretty funny
