Is 175$ enough for a tailshaft housing?!
I am in the process of having the 727 in my 89' rebuilt for the 4th time in 30,000 miles. the tailshaft housing had a crack on the flange the first time they rebuilt it so they tig welded it up and put some JB weld over it which seemed to hold for awhile, but now the JB weld looks cracked.
I have looked all over for a different housing but can't find a match. Now the guy I am having rebuild it this time says he can find one (supposedly the last one in the country) for $175 with shipping
I find it hard to believe their that rare with all the old junk 727's around that were on a dodge diesel.
Does any one have any parts sources so I can atleast see if this price is in the ball park? I think the housing is specifec to a 727 on a diesel. ( I was told this any way.)
By the way I'm finally putting a trans temp gauge in the old beast along with routing in the AC condenser for more cooling,(its atleast 5 times bigger than the stock cooler) I hope this helps keep my tranny alive alittle longer!
Thanks for any help

727s are pretty tough units. Four rebuild in 30k doesn't sound right to me, unless the tailshaft problem was causing it to self-destruct. I'd be interested to hear a more detailed diagnosis.

2x4 or 4x4
?
I have a whole 2x4 core I took out for my 5sp conversion.

Its a 2 wheel drive, I think the heat is what got my tranny, I was hauling around 18,000# of firewood 70 miles then when I got to the customer I had to back up a step driveway, the tranny didn't like that so it slipped acouple times. Then as luck would have it I made it half way home, then the alternater bearing went out.
I got a new alternater the next day and put it on then I notice the inj. pump is leaking between the block were the lines screw in and the main body!
I made it home with out any problems but the fluid was burnt bad with lots of metal and black chips in the pan,and the TC was making that knocking noise... So I decided to pull the tranny before it stranded me again.
The truck has 300,000 miles on it I think(the dealer I bought it from said anyway)I paid $3,000 for the truck 5 years ago in missouri and maybe 60 miles from the lot is where the tranny blew the first time! Dealer says theres nothing he can do try putting someof that magic gue in there to free up the valves or something,LOL.
So as you can see I have had a lot of fun with this old truck over the last 5 years and am about ready to through it in the scrap pile!
If the body wasnt so solid and the motor not a cummins I would have scraped it years ago!
