1693 code

I am new to the forum. I have looked through the threads on the 1693 code. I am somewhat confused in that this seems to be a companion code, but it is the only code I get on the odometer display. I have unplugged the power module but still see the same symptoms

Symptoms: engine light is on, tach is working intermittently, intermittent loss of power.

I am thinking the camshaft position sensor may be the culprit, but am open to any suggestions before I start changing parts.

Welcome to DTR.......please fill out your sig so we know a little more about what you are driving....

The 1693 companion DTC is code triggered by another code that has been stored in the PCM or ECM that is not retrievable without a scanner. The 1693 simply lets you know that you must hook up a scanner to get the actual trouble code.....don't start throwing parts at the truck until you get it properly scanned to retrieve the codes you need to know.

Thanks, I thought my profile was the sig. This should look a bit better.

Do I need to get the codes dumped at a dealer or should any reputable garage be able to help?

Yup, your sig is part of your profile......it didn't show up in your first post so I didn't think it was filled out. You don't have to go to the dealer to get the codes pulled.....any reputable shop with a reasonably up to date scanner that is OBD II compatible should be able to pull the codes for you.

Lots of shops like to charge you for pulling codes. If you go to AutoZone, they will do it for free, and if you're nice, you can usually talk them into clearing the codes for you also. Not that I've ever done that or anything...

No point going to Autozone or a similar store if you have the 1693 DTC.....all they will use is a Code reader which won't retrieve anymore codes than what the Odometer display will show.....you must go to a shop that has a DRB style scanner to pull the codes that aren't retrievable with a code reader.

I was a bit skeptical about the Auto Zone approach, I mainly patronize Napa. Imaging my surprise seeing a sign in the window that said, engine light on? We can help and they did.

I have a 0336 and 1693 companion code. The 0336 code is a crankshaft position sensor.

Intermittent Tachometer

My Dodge Cummins (1999 3/4 ton) had the same symptoms. Tachometer jumping around and slight/intermittent loss of power. Check out:

http://www.dodge-diesel.org/articles/cps/ckp.htm

This fixed my problem. It is very similar to the module on the rear differential that runs your speedometer...but this one is behind your starter mounted on the engine block. It fixed my Tach problem and intermittent loss of no. 1 injector.

Good luck,
Rock

The crankcase position sensor seems to have fixed the problem, I'll know by the time my 45 minute drive to work is over.

Thanks for the advice. To CTD-Nut, I am not sure what you mean by "what did Napa use to pull the codes?". I went to Auto zone and they used a scan tool which gave me the 0336 code. The 1693 code came from the odometer readout.

I generally use Napa because I find myself doing a lot of work on fire trucks for my volunteer fire department. Napa still has a lot of paper manuals with pictures of parts. They don't mind letting me browse through the books and pull a lot of parts until we find something that will work. Latest project is a 1976 American LaFrance built on a Ford C914 chassis with a 534 CID gasoline engine. This thing has tremendous bottom end power, but hasn't met a gas station it didn't like.

Anyway, great first experience with this group. I used to be very active in a Hummer group when I had my 95 Hummer wagon.

Alright guys, just got back from Pheasant hunting in NoDak and had the loss of power issue. Didnt notice the Tach being weird but went to pass someone with the edge comp on 5x5 and the thing was cutting in and out on me. turned it down to 3x5 and passed again and same thing but a lot less noticeable. With the box off i dont notice it at all. Checked codes yesturday and i got the 1693. Just wondering if anybody noticed the same deal with the box on or off and if other codes can be pulled with a 1693?? thanks little worried that its my VP44 but i dont know if that goes with this code or not
