12V Sluggish After New Lift Pump
I have a 94 12V CTD with 260k on it.
I just replaced the lift pump with a new one from Cummins and now the truck is very sluggish on take off.Starting the truck is a pain to.I have to lay on the throttle to get it to fire and when it does it rolls out white smoke like crazy.I bleed the sytem as much as i could to get all the air out.I replaced the filter while i was their to and filled it full of fuel befor i put it back on.
The prime on the lift pump never gets hard to push, dont know if it should but it doesnt.I bled the lines at the filter the injector pump and the motor end.It toke about 3 hours of pumping and bleeding to get fuel to the injectors and finaly took pressurizeing the tank abit to get it to fire.At first the truck would not idle on its own.I had to keep my foot on the throttle to get it to stay running. After a minute or so it was runnig but real rough.i then went back and bleed it again and the idleing got better. The truck is still idleing a little rough and it is still hard to fire.Ive drivin it about 2 hours and the problem is still their.I whent back and bleed the lines at the motor one last time.while i was doing this the truck was at idle and i noticed that each line i craked the idle got rougher except for the number 6 cylinder. When i cracked that line the idle stayed the same(rough).
After siting over night the truck is still hard to start but when it warms up i can shut it down and then it will fire right back up no problem what so ever.
So heres my question.Did the new pump just bring out a bad injector? If so should i go ahead and up grade all of them?Should i go back and bleed the sytem again? If so ,should i do it the same as ive been doing? What about the fuel shut off could it be not opening all the way causing this?Or could it be a little of all 3?
Any help would be greatly apreciated.
thanks Chris

That sounds more like an overflow valve problem to me. Do yourself a favor and don't go to Cummins. They want about $70 for one. The best price is here:

$35 + $7 shipping and handling.

If they haven't been replaced before I would replace them due to the mileage on your truck . Also the return line from the IP to the tank will get pinholes in it and cause hard starting. It's a bugger to replace because you can't see it. The reason I asked about the lines was when you replaced the lift pump you could have bumped some other lines that were in marginal shape.

I just thought of another item. If you replace the return line, Infidel on this board, suggests replacing it all the way to the tank. It seems that the metal fitting by the bell housing tends to crack when you replace the rubber line.

I should just replace both of them for good measure.but i hate throughing stuff at it just to make it work and never quite figuer out what was wrong. But i will put it on the lift tommorrow and look at the lines.
I had a fella tell me about replaceing my injectors wit ones from a 95-98 5 speed. Is this a good option?Do i need to do anything else or are they pretty much a bolt in?

If you replaced the line but not the valve, let us know if that worked before you get the valve. I'm curious to see if the line was your problem all along.

Well the return line has been replaced for about a week now and their was a slight change in the starting of the truck .It still is hard to start and still is belching white soke on start up.So tommorrow i will replace the overflow valve and see how she does after a week or so.
I did however notice some drie rotting on the ruber hose and some crap in the steel line so hope fully the valve will cure the problem
thanks Chris
