12V Gas Mileage and RPM at Highway Speed

Hello Everyone,

I have a couple of questions that are related.

First off, what mileage are most of you all noticing both in the city and on the highway (towing and empty). Secondly, what type of RPM are most of you pulling at 65MPH on the Highway?

I am asking because I have not been seeming to get very good gas mileage in my truck. I am getting about 15-16 in town and maybe 17 or so on the highway when I am not towing. At 65 MPH I am pulling about 1750 RPM so I am not certain what rear gear ratio I have.

My truck is a 97 2500 2WD, standard cab, auto.

I hear these stories of many guys getting 19+ MPG in town, and am pretty disappointed in my mileage pased on such.
Regards,
Steve

My 95 with a slush box gets about 16 mpg with a mix of city/freeway driving no load. On the highway no load I get about 18 mpg and at about 1750 RPM's at 65 - 70 mph. I have 3:55 gear ratio and bed shell.
I do have a built tranny, injectors and an H2 turbo + star wheel turned up for some towing power. When I have a 7 - 8K pound load my milage is down to about 13 - 14 mpg doing 65 - 70 mph.

Well, i'll tell you what i've seen with my truck. When I bought it with the stock auto, it had no real power mods, just the banks stuff, the best I got was 21mpg city driving. I didn't see that again, I leveled at 18 with the auto once I started driving harder, lol.

Now I swapped in the 5spd, and ground a 100 plate, and moved the starwheel and afc forward. I also found a new love for 30psi boost, so lets just say this last tank was very aggressive driving. I just filled up tonight and clocked 19.1mpg city/country roads driving hard. So the 5spd to me really took a load off the engine and improved mpg. Because the 100 plate added alot of power so I thought i'd loose some mpg, but this is the first tank i've clocked with the 5spd and it went up, and I drove really hard this last tank, So i think I can clock 21-22 or so if I drive pretty conservative.

at 65 i push 2100rpm's i think, i've got 4.10's.

I kinda think so to, because the revs are up so it's clearing more fuel than lugging the engine. To me 1700 is lugging it, lol , I like to stay around 1900 or so.

my mpg will plummet if i cruise above 2000rpms...i like it 1700-1800 rpms...i think a big factor is overrall speed more than anything...i have heard stories of guys loosing 5th gear and riding home using 4th with comparable mpg...anythign over 65mph is gonna drop ur mpg IMHO...stories of people crusing at 75mph at 2200rpms and gettign 22mpg is

All stock drive train, no bed shell, 1995.
16.8 - 17.2 on almost every fill up (Hand Calc'd).
Average RPM's would be right around 1800-1900 (75mph) with a mix of city driving as well.

with my 98 12v slush box 4x4 with 3.55 gears and 285 tires:

average (around home, open roads but not highway 55mph normally, with stop and go) i would say 16-17mpg

open road 60mph last week i got 19mpg and that had some aggressive driving in it.

towing (only really towed a long distance once) was 7k load for 1,000 miles: right at 13.8mpg on all tanks towing at 75mph.

i hafta say its bs that some of you guys say you are getting 19 or 20 and still driving aggressively unless our "standards" of aggressive are completely different. cause if i drive my truck hard it drops the mileage down very quickly.

My fuel gauge is broken so I calculate when I need to fill up by resetting my trip odometer at ever fill up and filling up ever 350 miles or so (though I have done 450 in the 2500 before). So it gives me a good excuse to calculate my mileage. I get around 17MPG in my 3500 with 3.54 gears, a freshly rebuilt auto with GB VB and TC, and no power mods.2500 gets about 16MPG with 4.10s and stock auto and no power mods.

The truck in the signature will get 22-24 on the highway empty depending on how fast I drive. It always does better if I go for long distances and use the cruise control. In town I am getting 16 or so. Not sure about pulling since I dont tow very much.

well, i'll let you know what I get with this tank doing driving normal. I was expecting some low milage last tank because I drove in the mountains some with steep hills so there was lots of pedal being used, plus I installed that 100 plate so my foot was always in it trying to make some smoke, so for me thats aggressive compared to how I normally drive.

With the 96 in the sig, I get 15-16 in the winter in mixed driving, 17-18 in warm weather. I hand calc it every time and adjust for the tires.

my truck averages around 18.5 city/highway/hunting in Oklahoma. I have 235's (I like narrow and tall tires) and usually cruise at about 70mph. When I had a working cruise control I got better mileage.

In Houston TX I did get better mileage all around, I think I got an average of 20, would have to double check my books to make sure, but that was a fuel issue, much better fuel down there then up here, it must be that fresh off the boat deal...

Towing, I think that I usually get around 16 while towing my jeep and gear (about 9000lbs) and the Jeeps cab sets above my Trucks cab. As for these people driving agressively and getting 20-22 mpg in town, I would doubt it. When I drive aggresively I get around 15mpg, and if I'm really punching it, i.e. smoking the BMW who tried to cut me off for a long, I get about 13mpg.

PS These numbers are figured from driving roughly 27000 and keeping records of every time that I have filled up, I have also roughly hand calced my odometer and found it to be off 7%, which was predicted by the larger tires, I had not calced the odometer with the 245's, which might be another reason why I got better mileage with those tires.
