12 valve noise
I've noticed that the 95 CTD with 177K miles, I just bought sure seems to be noisy when first cranked and may even have a slight miss when first driving off, although it clears up pretty quickly.I guess it could be that I'm used to hearing the 3rd Gen that I sold If I can just get the darn TC to lock I'll be a happy camper. After checking the balljoints for play today I have found that they are tighter than the 2nd set on the 03

Welcome to the 12 valve family.
P pumps are fixed timing so the first choice is to increase the advance to 16° or more. Sounds strange, but it helps the noise.
TC lockup could be a few issues.
Bad brake light. If the brake light switch goes "on", the TC lockup amd cruise goes "off". Hold your toeunder the brake pedal and see if the TC locks up.
TPS or Thottle Postion Sensor needs help. Many have luck cleaning, but often you are better just replacing.
Start there.
