I hear that Cummins has figured out how to block downloaders from working on 09's.They are supposed to create a no crank/no start condition and the only way around is to reflash with the oem ware. The replacement ecm's that will be shipped out in the future for the 6.7's will be updated with this feature as well

Does that mean that the 08 I just bought is worth a lot more than I just gave for it? DJ

There's no way they can legally do this. Who are they to prevent any OWNER from modifying their vehicle? Sure, deny a warranty claim if there is aftermarket installed parts but physically preventing the upload and/or killing the truck when one has been installed is just plain illegal. That is vandalism, plain and simple. Once the truck leaves their showroom floor, it no longer belongs to them. The owner is free to do whatever he/she chooses with their vehicle, provided it is within the scope of the law. They even have a choice to violate these laws but must be willing to accept the possibility of consequences should they arise.

LAND OF THE FREE people. I am well aware that we as a nation are sliding further and further away from democracy with each passing sunrise but we aren't quite to a full-on corporate dictatorship yet!

It is legal and most probably enforceable on the consumer through the EPA's regulations on emission standards.

There has been allot of chatter about it coming. Watch the Smarty and/or other downloader threads. They've been talking about it.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it's true I'm sure it will be bypassed. I mean look at just about everything electronic. They lock cell phones so you can't use them with other networks, people unlock them all the time. They made DVD's so you can't copy them, that lasted about a week. If someone can lock it there are people who can unlock it. Sometimes the smartest people don't work for OEM's. If there's money in it someone will do it.

Proprietary software might have something to do with it as well as the emissions enforcement. Since I am out of warranty and I had it voided for buying in the USA, I would have been really upset if they were to have tried this with my truck. Or maybe that would mean they would have had to honor the warranty?
Big Brother seems to be getting bigger all the time. I wish these manufacturers and the gov's would give the option to buy without a warranty with a reduced purchase price.

Now theres an idea. If you were prepared to modify it from the start, then you know the risks and would take the truck just as built. I wonder how much of a hit that would be on the price?

Huh. Now thats one of the best ideas Ive heard in a long time! I dont buy the truck for the warranty, I buy the best truck and platform to mod...plain and simple

Less initial investment, more funds for mods!
