Question 06 power steering issues?

This morning on the way to work I felt something in the steering I've never felt before.
It's hovering around freezing here and as I was turning a bit to follow the road I felt a bit of resistance in the steering wheel, like it didn't want to turn, kinda felt like the tires were stuck in a couple ruts in the road (if you know what I mean). It happened a few times, never noticed this happen before. I just turned a little harder and it went past, just feels weird. Checked the PS fluid, it's fine, belt is tight.

If I need to take it in I need to do it tomorrow (but I bet they're totally booked), sposed to be going upcountry Saturday, up to the interior of BC towing a trailer up the winding highway, it will be cold, possibly snowing, about 5 hours each direction.

Is this a known issue?
Does it get worse and should I cancel my trip till I get it looked at?

Taking it in means putting the factory air cleaner back on, removing my programmer etc...

I havent noticed the symptoms you had, but my steering was real loose, so on my last oil change I mentioned it. They said my steering box was so bad that they couldn't let me leave the shop without a new one - so they replaced it right there no questions asked. My steering is much tighter now.

I just called 2 dealers, was told there was no issues they know of with the power steering on this truck.
One guy did say it could be a front axle U-joint and they have done a 'few', I told him there's on 37k km on it though...??

Isn't there a joint on the end of the axle that needs to be lubed? Like a CV joint or whatever...

Redneck, no lubed joints on axles, only fron driveshaft.

Tjar, what were your symptoms before they changed it?

My truck started doing that same thing, now once in awhile at low speeds only (thankfully) I loose all power steering, but comes back after a short while. So I called the dealer today and its going in Monday. I will let you know what the diagnosis is. My guess PS pump. I'll let someone else but their knuckles until 36k.

Talking

DOH!!

Never mind!

Fixed it, you'll never guess what it was!

As I'm leaving work today, I notice the same thing, the steeing wheel feels like it's sticking or something when I turn.
That's when I saw the problem (it was too dark this morning).

I've gotten into the habit of always having a roll of black tape handy, comes in handy, (I call it black magic), 1001 uses.

Well in my old truck I got in the habit of keeping a roll on my turn signal, and I look down and see a brand new roll sitting on the lever, every time I turn it was rubbing on the spokes of the steering wheel causing the problem!

Anyhow, I'd like to nominate myself for bonehead of the year if there is such a thing!!

(Gawd, I hope this thread disappears quickly)

I've got myself an 06 as well & one time, and one time only I've had your issue of the steering just kinda "not being there". I was trying to turn & it felt like the tyres were locked in a rut or something....but I just turned harder & then, with a pop, they went.

That was at 7k on the OD, now with 23k, it still hasn't happened again. I hope it never does.
