'05 exhaust question

I am going to either buy a new exhaust or add just a muffler to my 05 Crew Cab Short bed, but I have a few questions that arose after reading the other exhaust threads I found. First, for a stock truck 5" is too big, correct? What does the turbo back system do to my benefit that a cat-back or muffler kit only will do? Since I already have 4" tubes, I am not sure the cost would benefit me to get a whole new kit, but at the same time the effort of just getting in a new muffler might just make a whole new kit worth it. I am just a little confused on the options on the exhaust end of this truck that I can look at. Also- are there any better downpipes out there, or is the stock 4" considered "good enough"? Can someone clarify these questions for me- I come from the dodge gas side of things, I am a little lost during my learning period.

Thanks!

Thumbs up RattlerSkin

Well many people will tell you that 5" exhaust is not necessary until you reach about 550HP......With that being said, the 5" exhaust on a stock truck is basically lowering your exhaust temps & deepening your sound and the "coolness" factor. Many experience bad drone with 5" exhaust.

Your better option may be to utilize the stock 4" system on your truck & just replace the stock muffler with a better free flowing one. I think MBRP does in fact make a direct replacement muffler for your truck....may want to check their website. Of course you could purchase any aftermarket muffler & take it to an exhaust shop & they should be able to make it work for you.

The stock 4" downpipe is just fine....no need in purchasing an entire 4" exhaust kit since you already have it on their compliments of Dodge....just replace the restrictive stock muffler & maybe add a stainless tip.

Just cut the muffler off and replace it with a piece of 4in and be done with it prolly only cost 50 bucks, join the club.

The truck is in Virginia though, and I understand that VA state police are pretty strict on straight-piped trucks on the interstate. I am a little weary about straight-piping my truck, not just because of that though. I dont want Dodge to screw with my warranty because of it, too. I think I will just go with the muffler kit and a tip.
