My 05 chatters a lot more than my 03. Fuel mileage is fine. Is that the timing,& is it normal for the 05's?

Yes, usually it is normal I'm guessing that you have about 15-20k on it??

Does it do it only in gear Ideling. If so:

Change your fuel filter and fill filter housing with Sea Foam injector cleaner.

Start up and run for 3 minutes then shut down for the night.

Use Howes meaner cleaner for daily usage and watch the chatter clear up!!

Worked for me!!!

It has this bit of chatter when accelerating, and cruising at 65mph or so. Idle is smooth. The truck only has about 7000miles on it. I just bought it used. The owner towed only once, about 600miles, and after that it was 2 miles to work and back(thus the low miles). I ran a bottle of Howes meaner cleaner through it in about 6 fillups. Now I am just starting to use my usual dose of MMO per fill. (Maybe I should get another bottle of Howes, and just keep it up?) It sounds like advanced timing to me, but I'm not that familiar with timing on a diesel. It isn't really terrible, but just different from my 03, or my brother's 06.

You need to work the motor . Take a long trip towing a heavy trailer and drive the out of it . Sounds like this thing has been babied .

I agree jw. (Yet I'm still averaging 21 US mpg hand calculated.) I won't be towing my fiver till next season, but I'll take it on a good, looong hot run soon. I'm still curious about the bit of chatter, and should I get another bottle of Meaner cleaner and keep that up for a while, or just go with the MMO for now?

A little chatter is normal with these quiet engines . However , I special ordered my truck and it came in with very loud chattering and a miss . I ended up with 6 new injectors . But even after that , there was still a slight ticking sound .

I've got no missing or ticking, great acceleration too, so I guess it's normal?

I've heard the trick about Seafoam in the filter housing.. Did it myself...

As soon as I did it my truck developed a loud knock. Went away after driving the bawls off it. Yet it still comes back at weird times.. Only in gear idleing, and usually at a stoplight so that everybody looks at me funny going... "What's wrong with that POS!????"

I have to agree hook the truck to something big over 5k and tow hard for 1000 miles! Work it hard and that will build enough heat to clean off the carbon.

I'm not sold on the MMO mix as I have a Cat on mine and extra soot is a for porper running. The cat requires more than 500 degrees on the egt guage to work efficiently and clean itself.

If nothing else take a long road trip to romantic spot in the hills with your honey and flat blaze a trail there!! Remember these trucks need to be worked hard!! And it is a good excuse to ................ have some fun!!
