Are the 04.5's Bad on Front Ends??

I love my truck I have all the mods below and I have only 35,000 Miles and I just experienced a ciesed rear u-joint, bad front left u-joint and I already had the front drive axle repalced due to wear also. This was all covered under warranty and my dealership has been really good they know everything I have done and don't question anything so no big deal but are the all common things for these trucks?? I am out of basic warranty in a year so just wondering. Thanks in advance.

First off. Stock u-joints flat out suck. Why they put non-greasable u-joints in our trucks is beyond me...

I will probably take some heat from this statement but everytime I've been around a lifted vehicle with wide wheels/tires the steering and axle components always take the beating... IMO it's well worth it.

I haven't heard of any axle shaft failures tho Thats odd...

My 04.5 front end has had every part replaced now except the axle housing and differential and gears. My truck had a very hard life before I got it with only 35,000 miles on it. It was owned by a farm in the rice-producing part of Arkansas, and saw a lot of time in mud. Everything went wrong with the front axle and now it's built pretty good. When my hub assemblies went bad, I did the Dynatrac manual hub conversion with 35 spline outers and greaseable U joints, which in turn keeps the front driveshaft from spinning all of the time, so maybe it will keep those U joints happy for a long time. I replaced the steering with a crossover steering kit from Don Thuren, replaced the track bar with one from Don Thuren, put on a DSS steering brace after my stock gear box went out. Now I have a new steering box from PSC that has been tapped for hydro and I'm running hydro assist steering. The ball joints went out too, so I replaced them with new ball joints from Quad 4x4. I wish they were greaseable but they should last a long time anyway.

The AAM 925 is a great axle, but since there is no CAD and the hubs are automatic, everything spins all of the time and there is more drag on the parts, so things will wear out a little quicker. Just make sure you upgrade, don't just replace... because stock sucks.

Well, they replaced the front u-joints and messed up the wheel bearing and disc getting it apart so I got pretty much a new left side anyway!! But I will run these until they go again and go an aftermarket greaseable for sure!! I will post some pics soon
