'03 100,000 mile report

Ok, so I'm late to the party- took me 7 years to hit 100k. I can honestly say that I am very pleased. This truck has served me and my family quite well. It turned 100k exactly on top of Logan Canyon summit last Sunday morning- a place that truck had been countless times on the way to scout camp, hunting, fishing, skiing, pulling the toy hauler, etc. Was almost kind of emotional- couldn't of asked for a better location to celebrate.

Here's the run-down:

5k: tranny cooler line brace and some other TSB done. No charge.
12k: Installed Edge EZ w/boost elbow and gauges to "make it an HO".
35k: Ball joints, steering box (leaking), and stereo replaced under warranty. No charge.
40k: Stock Michelins replaced with 285/70 BFG ATs.
75k: Replaced rear prop shaft u-joints ($150) 285/70 Hankook ATMs installed . Added Modulite trailer light controller ($60). New shocks ($225).
78k: Lift pump died- was expected. Only time it left me stranded, needed a tow. Replaced under warranty ($100 deductible).
80 & 90k: Replaced front axle u-joints ($150).
90k: Another steering box (worn out this time, $225). Backed into a tree and destroyed the original tailgate . Bought a replacement on Ebay, had it painted.
100k: needs ball joints again, one fog light, possibly brake pads.

Just the typical things for these trucks really.

As far as maintenance, I did it all myself "by the book"- schedule A for engine oil, schedule B for everything else. Only thing I did different was a complete tranny fluid exchange at 60k. Replaced the fuel filter yearly for awhile, then twice yearly (with the oil change) after that. Thanks for you all on DTR for helping me keep it in good mechanical shape.

Oh, and it NADA avg. retails for about $19k, auction prices in the $16.5k range. I paid just under $29k for it new- not bad at all for a seven-year depreciation.

Sadly, I parked it today with a for sale sign in the window. Will really hate to see her go, but the kids had outgrown the quad cab. Hopefully the 2011 I got as a replacement will serve us as well as this one did.

Sounds like you need a Mega Cab. It fits my 13 year old who is about 5'-9"! Was told my daughter (who is 4yrs old) will be tall also. Plus my other son. I bought my truck w/ about 96,000 on it and now it's at 101,350 (got it almost five months ago).

Need to do a full service on it next (flush brakes, front and rear diffs, t-case, coolant, transmission, power steering).

No need to perform a full service on it. The truck is for sale and the op has a new 2011.

I just hope that my next truck is as trouble free as this one has been now that I have 100K on it. All I've done is service it and just a few mods. Basically, it's stock. Thinking of looking at an 11 or 12 but the smog stuff and the full engine compartment scare me but the power and 6 speed trans tempt me.

I use to own a 200.7 4x4 Laramie with a 6.7L. I got maybe 9 mpg in the city and maybe 17 on the hwy. I now own a 2006 2x4 5.9L SLT and get about 15 in the city (lie-o-meter shows 19 city). Both 100% stock. To try to save fuel w/ the 6.7L, I added the Banks Ram air w/ super scoop and unplugged the EGR to no avail. I didn't want to spend the money to get the delete and mess with my warranty. It was nice to having the power and the 6 speed while towing my 25' 5,000lb travel trailer but the fuel was killing my wallet!! And the repeated DPF filter needing to be burned-off. The final blow was on spring break coming home from Ft. Davis it (the DPF filter) wouldn't clean itself and almost left me and my family stranded 100 miles from any town in the desert! A Toyota Camery pulling a small Uhaul going uphill passed me while top speed for me was 55mph (the pedal was on the floor) it's called limp mode. Did that for 5hrs to get to a town. I'm now very happy w/ my used (new to me) 2006 truck!!!

That isn't the first report like that with the 6.7. I get 20 hwy bare and 13 towing. Everything is paid for. At the rate I put on miles I can wait a few years. Maybe I'll just put the money into a ZO6 or retire a year earlier.

I'm leaning toward the DPF delete. Also leaning toward a daily driver, but with a commute of 12 miles to work (1/2 city, 1/2 highway) I ran the numbers and it's hardly worth the hassle.

I have always had a work car. I live 8 miles from work all highway but at 15ish mpg for teh truck and 30ish for the car it saves me a fair amount of money. I never have anything worth a hoot for a car though. Thats where it gets non economical. if you have to buy a car for more than a few hundred bucks its not gona pay to have it. my curent car was free so its realy saving me money. It looks like a heap but it has run me around for over a year with minimal upkeep and over twice teh trucks milage on these short trips. I drive them till they drop then replace them with anouther clunker. Not to mention the wear and tear it saves on the truck not having to cold start it in the winter and keeping the salt off the truck. Idident drive th truck more than twice from Jan1-March. Kept it in the garage salt free last winter. That and if the car gets hailed on 1 time ever, instead of the truck it pays for itself in insurance deductible savings. Theres more than the fuel savings that makes a small beater car worth having around.
