'01 Steering Question

My steering seems to be a bit "loose" and I feel a slight "clunking" in the steering wheel when I am driving at times. I notice it more on rough roads than others. When I grab the linkage between the steering column and the steering gear box it rotates left to right a lot with the motor off. Is this the slop that I am feeling? Is there a way to tighten the steering gear box or does it need to be replaced. I just had the truck state inspected and all of the ball joints passed.

Thanks for any help

There is a way to tighten the steering box. I think there's a how to in the tech section. Make sure your wheels are perfectly straight and don't tighten it but maybe a 1/4 turn at a time. Otherwise you could crack the housing so I'm told.

While your at it - Look at the sector shaft (output shaft) on the box as you gently rotate the steering shaft back & forth. That sector shaft has been known to wear causing it to move front/rear before it rotates = play in wheel.
