A completely different injection system. The new ones use a coomon rail. I also believe the computer gives a small pre burst of fuel just prior to the main burst and this takes away much of the diesel noise.

I like the cack a lack the 2nd Gens put out, sure wouldn't want to do anything to hush mine up. (maybe make it more disturbing to other motorist)?
The new ones come to life under acceleration thought right? The huge differnece in stock power is a nice change for the newer ones too, right?

It has to do with the new common rail setup and computer controlled injection. There is a company that offers blankets to wrap around the valve cover and engine but they are very expensive.

I wrapped my oil pan with a asphalt based insulation material, it dropped the sound A LOT. It is not like the '05s but much, much quieter now.
Added same insulation to hood, but didn't want to messwith valve cover or pump, since this stuff when it goes on it gets sticky and messy, definitely not pretty.

Difference is like day and night, you can hear your stereo much better now.
BTW turbo whistle is more noticeable, since engine noise is reduced.

I like to be able to hear the engine... It's my audio tachometer... I know when to shift then!

I HATE QUIET RIGS! Every rig I've ever owned was noisy!

The new common rail uses three different injection events which quites the engine noise down. Funny how the Power***** could not manage two.

Anyway, I wish I could quite down my truck but wouldn't switch to the new injectors and their problems.

Trust me, mine doesn't sound quiet from the outside, the 4" exhaust with resonator makes it sound like a Peterbuilt semi with an airplane engine is coming.

It's just inside, it gets a little quieter, I drive it for some 8 to 14hrs stretches, and it's more enjoyable.

I agree but disagree. Going from my bombed 1st gen (about 315 rwhp) to my new 2005 3rd gen. It is so much more quieter. That is nice as I get use to it. What bugs me is that it makes a slight different noise as you rev it up due to the 3 different fuel injections. When it is around 1500 - 2000 rpm, I hate the stupid noise it puts out. Sounds like a gas motor that has really bad timing. But the power is really good. Seems a little low on power at first take off but I heard that the motor senses if there is a load on it, if not, it defuels the motor some. But if it has a load, you get full boost. Power braking a little does give me full boost and it gets up and goes much better.

But inside it is quiet, outside it does still have a slight diesel noise with the 4" piping from turbo all the way back.

For the 1st & 2nd gens, probably 3rd's also. They do make blankets for them. That reduces the noise a lot from what I have heard. I forget where but did see at one time the decibel levels for the 1st gen trucks. Lower end of crank puts out about 105 dbs or something like that.

I do miss my old 1st gen though. It would still put this new one to shame for at least the first 100 - 150 feet. But it was built for that. Now it is time to mod this new 3rd gen one.
