ok for those of you who have had a chance to experience both how do they compare? What are the pros and cons of each? How do the torque converters in each compare.

This is a question for Luke S. if he will answer. I was wondering the same thing. The 68rfe is good I am just very skeptical on the TC.


Luke, have you pulled heavy with the 68rfe. I read the Aisin you really like pulling with.

I have put quite a few miles on the 68rfe but none of them pulling. We went to Forth Worth last week to get a new Laramie Mega cab dually for a good customer of ours and he pulls a 18,000lb horse trailer and he claims it is the best stock pulling truck he has ever had. He also has an 06 mega cab dually with a G56 and an 03 quad cab with a 48re, he says it is superior to those two in stock form. I personally think this engine and transmission should do any job you ask of it within reason, but as I said in another thread, it doesn't matter how good a truck we come out with a lot of people on here will say its not good enough.

Well that's good Luke S. I drove a 68rfe with 3.73's. I am used to 4.10's. I liked the new setup just worried about the TC. It felt kinda lose to me but it was empty. Very hard to tell. The exhaust brake was awesome. My 48re is fine. I just don't like the TC while pulling my horse trailer and if you replace it with aftermarket it opens up a whole new set of problems that can happen.

I've heard the torque converter is actually tighter than the old 48 RE and a cross section I've seen shows a dual plate clutch for higher torque capacity. than the previous 310mm converter used with the 48RE. My experience is that the cooling is also excellent. The combination of good cooing and high lockup capacity will insure the integrity of the converter.

I've driven a CC/Aisin and the Aisin feels STOUT. It shifts kinda rough from first to second. Not bad but you do notice it.

Anyone know what the converter is like in the Aisin trans? Single disk? Double? whats the TQ capacity of it?

Saw a cross section at the auto show. It has a conventional clutch pack type arrangement with an apply piston in the converter. I believe 4 friction surfaces. The transmission appears to be very stout.
