Does anyone know if someone makes a stand alone controller for a VGT turbo yet

In a nutshell, the computer opens or closes the vanes on the outside of the wheel of the turbo, on the basis of the rpm. Under lower rpms the vanes are somewhat closed therefore creating a small wheel that spools early and fast. As rpms increase the vanes open up, creating a bigger wheel, somewhat a larger turbo.
To me it sounds like yet another thing that could go wrong... the concept is pretty ingenuous though...

havent seen it yet, but i read on a nother forum that some guys are removing the electronic controler and puting a normal wastegate actuator on it to control the vains...

Man, I'd like to read more about that. Can you fish out the thread where you read about it?

looking at the cummins vgt im not sure if that would work, the control unit looks to be part of the center section, but if some one were to pull one apart there may be a way to do it, on the other hand i have a 06 international service truck with a dt466 and it has the electronic actuator mounted on a bracket with a rod that controls the vains. now i think that would be real easy to set up, but im not sure what this turbo is and dont have any specs yet but migh be worth a shot. and another thought... with the vains completely shut, would it possibly work as an exhaust brake?
i did some searching for thoes threads but only found guys talking about doing it, but i will keep looking. |

I was thinking about putting one on my truck, but if you can't control the VGT part with enough precision, it can act as an exhaust brake and possibly cause some driveability problems. That and they are pretty sensitive to soot. Too much soot and they plug up. Lots of Dodge dealerships are replacing/changing the 6.7 VGT turbo's out because they get clogged up.
You can control it with a 14 lb external wastegate or forgo the VGT part and just wire the vanes to where you want them. Tune it for a 20+CM hotside, or crank it down to <12CM for a stick truck. Rig up a manual adjustment for on-the-fly changes. I think it's a neat idea if you have time and money to play around with it. Spend some time in google. Lots of import guy's are using this turbo with some fairly good results. You can find some disassembly photos too.

Yeah, it's almost ignorant. VE guys sure bash the VP and CR guys enough, kind of hypocritical if you ask me. I personally would like to see it done. Anyway to up the power on the pig's is good by me.
