4x4 727 to getrag swap
Ok, so i have the opportunity to put a stick in my truck finally! A fella I know has a 1990 w250 single cab long bed cummins 4x4 with a getrag. He wants an auto, which is what i have in my truck. (Our trucks are the same besides the tranny). Now what I'm wondering is how hard will the swap be, what will i need, and roughly how long do you think it'll take? My truck had a getrag in it at one point but was then swapped back to an auto. Thanks in advance!

Could be a weekend project if you wanted it to be.
It is all pretty straight forward bolt out / bolt in stuff.
The auto coolers and lines are always a little messy to pull.
You might want to get some new transmission mounts, and maybe a clutch on hand as well.

I converted mine in a day, but I had all the parts ready to go. I think you may have to swap the ECM with your deal. I'm not completely sure about that, maybe someone can give a definite answer.
Since you're swapping back and forth I would set aside a whole weekend for the jobs. Have everything you think you may need at the shop and ready to go.

You will not need a PCM for swapping in a manual.
His '90 auto will also not need a PCM swapped.
You guys can even keep your driveshafts as the 727 and Getrag are the same length.
Should be an easy swap with both trucks right there.

The fact that both your trucks are '90 helps a lot.
'89/'90 12Vs don't have PCM, so there are none to swap.
Then the 727 auto is the same length as the getrag.
The later A-518 auto is about 6 inches longer than either the 727 or 'Rag.
Doing this swap on a '92/'93 would require more parts to be swapped around, but it would still be a straight forward bolt in job.
I have done a bunch of manual swaps.

with the w 250 it already has the big transmission hump.so all you have to do is cut the hole for the stick. swap steering columns and while you are in there swap the automatic gear indicator cover. the swap it's self is pretty easy. like anything else the little stuff takes longer.
